OHIO — As election season approaches, Ohio voters are reminded to think twice before snapping selfies with their ballots. While neither “selfie” nor “photo” is specifically mentioned in Ohio voting laws, a 1997 statute restricts how completed ballots can be shared.

Under Section 3599.20 of the Ohio Revised Code, voters are prohibited from allowing others to see their marked ballots.

The law states: “No person shall attempt to induce an elector to show how the elector marked the elector’s ballot at an election; or, being an elector, allow the elector’s ballot to be seen by another, except as provided by section 3505.24 of the Revised Code.”

While a photo of a filled-out ballot could potentially violate this law, there is no record of anyone in Ohio being charged for posting such an image.
