OHIO — A 71-year-old Ohio man was arrested after deputies discovered multiple dead and malnourished animals on his property, according to the Marion County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies and a humane agent responded Thursday to a report of a horse stuck in a pasture fence.
Upon arrival, they found a black and white horse trapped in the fencing.
With the help of a neighbor, they freed the animal and contacted a veterinarian due to its poor condition.
While investigating the property, deputies discovered seven dead horses.
Four were inside a barn that also housed living horses, while three others were found in an area behind the barn.
Authorities rescued 11 horses and two goats from the property.
Marlin Rae Adkins, 71, was arrested on 18 counts of animal cruelty and three counts of failing to register a canine.
Veterinarians are continuing to evaluate the rescued animals, and officials say additional charges may be filed as the investigation continues.
