SOUTH CAROLINA — Two people were found dead inside a home in Gaffney, South Carolina, Thursday evening, and authorities believe carbon monoxide poisoning was the cause.

According to Dennis Fowler, police were called to a residence on Trenton Road around 5 p.m. after neighbors reported they had been unable to contact the occupants. Officers with the Gaffney Police Department responded to the scene.

When officers arrived, they detected a strong odor of natural gas and forced entry into the home, Fowler said. The Gaffney Fire Department was called to the scene, shut off the gas supply to the house, and ventilated the area.

Authorities said James Raymond Rennie, 71, and Deborah Rennie Drum, 76, who both lived at the residence, were found deceased in separate bedrooms. Fowler said there were no signs of foul play, and carbon monoxide poisoning is believed to have caused the deaths.

The incident remains under investigation, though officials emphasized there is no indication the deaths were the result of criminal activity.
