SOUTH CAROLINA — A Monday morning call about a man passed out on a utility terrain vehicle in Travelers Rest escalated into a pursuit and ended with the suspect facing multiple felony charges, according to the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies said they were called to Center Road after receiving a report of a man passed out on a UTV. When deputies arrived, the man woke up and accelerated the vehicle, nearly striking one of the responding deputies, authorities said. The suspect then fled the area, prompting a chase.

During the pursuit, deputies said the suspect abandoned the UTV and ran into a wooded area. While deputies were searching the woods, a single gunshot was heard.

Investigators later determined the shot was fired by a nearby resident who saw the suspect running through the area and discharged a round in an attempt to get the suspect to stop and stay in place. Deputies said the resident was not involved in the pursuit.

Deputies eventually located the suspect, identified as 45-year-old Brian Doyle Medlin. A Taser was deployed multiple times before Medlin was taken into custody. Authorities said Medlin was highly intoxicated and was transported to a hospital for evaluation.

Medlin is facing several charges, including attempted murder, public disorderly conduct, failure to stop for a blue light, and resisting arrest. The incident remains under investigation.
