PENNSYLVANIA — The East Allegheny School District is mourning the loss of a student after a fatal crash involving a vehicle in West Mifflin over the weekend.

In a statement posted Sunday on social media, the district confirmed that a sixth-grade student from Logan Elementary School was killed Saturday evening. The student was identified as Terrel Byars Jr., also known as TJ. The district said the student was struck by a car and died from his injuries. School officials expressed condolences to the student’s family, friends, classmates, and teachers, calling the loss tragic and deeply saddening.

According to the West Mifflin Police Department, the crash occurred around 5 p.m. Saturday.

Authorities closed Kennywood Boulevard in the northbound direction between Gleen Street and Hoffman Boulevard for several hours while they responded to reports of the incident. Police have not released additional details, and it remains unclear whether any charges have been filed.

The school district announced that grief counselors from Turtle Creek Valley Community Service will be available at Logan Elementary on Monday and Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Additional counseling support will be offered when classes resume on January 5. The investigation into the crash remains ongoing.
