OHIO — The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) is reminding drivers to prepare for winter weather and stay cautious on the roads.
Clearing snow from windows, lights, and license plates before driving is not only essential for visibility but also required by law.
Under Ohio Revised Code Section 4503.21, drivers cannot obstruct the view of their license plate or validation stickers. Violations of this law are considered misdemeanors.
Additionally, while driving with snow or ice on a vehicle’s roof is legal, drivers can be held liable if it falls off and causes damage or injury.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP) emphasizes the importance of clearing snow and ice from vehicles before driving to prevent accidents.
Last year, there were 8,104 crashes on snow, ice, or slush-covered roads in Ohio, including 15 fatal accidents.
Drivers are urged to slow down, leave extra space between vehicles, and use caution in winter conditions.
Ohio law also requires headlights to be on whenever windshield wipers are in use.
If a vehicle breaks down or becomes stuck, OSHP recommends turning on hazard lights, moving as far off the road as possible, remaining inside the vehicle, and calling #677 or 911 for assistance.
Additionally, clearing snow or debris from the tailpipe can help prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.
