Schools in North Carolina to close multiple days in January

NORTH CAROLINA — Public schools across North Carolina will be closed on multiple days in January 2026 to observe two federal holidays, according to standard district calendars.

Schools will be closed Thursday, Jan. 1, 2026, for New Year’s Day. The holiday marks the first day of the new year and is traditionally observed by school districts statewide.

Classes will also be canceled Monday, Jan. 19, 2026, in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The holiday honors the life and legacy of the civil rights leader and is recognized annually on the third Monday in January.

While individual district calendars can vary slightly, most public school systems in North Carolina observe both holidays as non-instructional days.

Families are encouraged to check with their local school districts for confirmation and for details on any additional teacher workdays or schedule adjustments in January.
