TENNESSEE — Schools across Tennessee will be closed on multiple days in January 2026 in observance of nationally recognized holidays.
Public schools are scheduled to close on Thursday, January 1, 2026, for New Year’s Day. The holiday marks the beginning of the new year and is observed nationwide. Classes are expected to resume the following school day, depending on individual district calendars.
Schools will also be closed on Monday, January 19, 2026, in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The federal holiday honors the life and legacy of the civil rights leader and is observed annually on the third Monday in January.
While these closures apply broadly to public school districts across Tennessee, families are encouraged to check with their local school systems for specific schedules. Some districts may already have these dates built into their academic calendars or may include additional closures or teacher in-service days around the holidays.
Parents and students are advised to plan ahead for childcare, travel, or other arrangements during the scheduled days off.
