MICHIGAN — A 33-year-old woman from South Rockwood is in critical condition after being run over late Wednesday night on a Monroe County roadway, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.
Authorities said deputies responded at approximately 9:42 p.m. to a reported crash on Helen Street, northeast of Barney Street, in Berlin Township.
Monroe County Sheriff Troy Goodnough said a preliminary investigation determined that a 57-year-old Monroe man was driving northeast on Helen Street at a slow speed when the woman approached his vehicle and attempted to get his attention by repeatedly grabbing the driver’s side door handle.
Investigators said the driver stopped and briefly spoke with the woman before driving away. Shortly afterward, the man noticed in his rearview mirror that the woman was sitting on the side of the road and returned to the scene, where he found her injured. Authorities believe the woman fell to the ground as the vehicle pulled away and was run over.
The man transported the woman to the hospital, where she remains in critical condition. The sheriff’s office said alcohol was a factor in the incident, but no further details were released.
The incident remains under investigation by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Services Division. Anyone with information is asked to call 734-240-7548. Anonymous tips may also be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAKUP or online at 1800speakup.org.
