Schools in Virginia to close multiple days in January

VIRGINIA — Public schools across Virginia will be closed on two days next month in observance of scheduled holidays, according to standard academic calendars.

Schools statewide will be closed on Thursday, Jan. 1, 2026, for New Year’s Day. The holiday marks the first day of the new year and is a traditional day off for students, teachers, and staff across the state.

Schools will also be closed on Monday, Jan. 19, 2026, in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The federal holiday honors the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and is observed annually on the third Monday of January.

No classes will be held on either date, though school offices and administrative operations may vary by district.

Parents and guardians are encouraged to check with their local school systems for details regarding extracurricular activities, childcare options, or schedule adjustments related to the closures.
