
VIRGINIA — A tractor-trailer crash caused significant traffic delays on Interstate 95 South in Richmond early Monday morning after a load of metal beams spilled across the roadway.
According to Virginia State Police, troopers responded at approximately 6:39 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 22, to a crash involving a box truck and a tractor-trailer in the southbound lanes of Interstate 95 near the Belvidere Street exit in Richmond.
Preliminary information indicates the box truck struck the center jersey wall and came to rest against it. As a result of the impact, the tractor-trailer overturned. Police said the tractor-trailer was hauling approximately 40,000 pounds of steel or aluminum beams, which spilled across all southbound lanes.
All southbound lanes of I-95 near Belvidere Street were closed for several hours as crews worked to clear the wreckage and remove the spilled metal beams from the roadway.
The driver of the box truck was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to police. The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured. The crash remains under investigation.
