One person dead after being struck by semi-truck in Florida

FLORIDA — A traffic incident responder was killed Monday morning after being struck by a semi-truck while working to clear a vehicle fire along Interstate 95 in Brevard County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers said the crash happened just after 9 a.m. in the northbound lanes of Interstate 95 near mile marker 228 in Mims. Investigators said a semi-truck with a trailer struck a CMTI traffic incident response truck that was on scene assisting with a vehicle fire.

The driver of the traffic response truck, whose name has not yet been released, was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger in the CMTI truck was airlifted to a hospital with serious injuries. Authorities said the 63-year-old driver of the semi-truck was not injured and remained at the scene following the crash.

The circumstances leading up to the collision remain under investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol.

As a result of the crash, all northbound lanes of I-95 are shut down, with traffic being diverted at State Road 46Southbound lanes were temporarily closed to allow a medical helicopter to land, and drivers are required to exit at Deering Parkway. Officials advised motorists traveling through the area to use U.S. 1 as the primary detour while the investigation and cleanup continued.
