TENNESSEE — One person was killed and another was injured after a shooting during a birthday party Saturday night in Smyrna, according to town officials.
Police said officers were called around 11 p.m. to Lara’s Event Center, located at 413 Nissan Drive, after reports of a shooting. Officials said a juvenile birthday party was being held at the venue at the time, with an estimated 50 people in attendance.
According to a press release, an altercation involving multiple people broke out inside the building during the event. Officials said the dispute escalated when a juvenile suspect fired a gun several times inside the event center.
Two people were struck by gunfire. One victim suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene. The second victim, who officials said was not involved in the altercation, was flown by LifeFlight to Vanderbilt University Medical Center for treatment.
Police said officers located and detained the juvenile suspect outside the building and recovered a firearm that had been reported stolen from the Nashville area. Multiple witnesses were interviewed at the scene, and investigators also reviewed security camera footage from the venue.
The juvenile suspect was charged with multiple offenses and taken to the Juvenile Detention Center, officials said. The investigation remains ongoing.
