NORTH CAROLINA — A 21-year-old man was arrested Thursday night following a high-speed motorcycle chase that ended in a crash and a brief foot pursuit, according to Apex police.
Police said an officer on patrol at the Beaver Creek Shopping Center observed Ashton Konopka driving a motorcycle recklessly. When the officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop, Konopka fled.
Court records indicate Konopka reached speeds of up to 100 miles per hour while weaving in and out of traffic and using the center turn lane to pass other vehicles.
Within minutes, the motorcycle struck a vehicle and slid along Williams Street, police said. Konopka then ran from the crash scene into nearby woods.
Officers later located Konopka near Apex Peakway and Bryan Drive, along with a handgun, according to police. He was taken to a hospital with minor injuries and later transported to the Wake County Detention Center.
