Multiple schools in Virginia announce closures for Friday

VIRGINIA — Winter weather conditions triggered a long list of school closures and delays across Virginia for Friday, December 12, 2025, with many divisions opting for remote instruction or adjusted schedules as temperatures and road conditions remained unsafe.

In the Alleghany Highlands, Amherst County, Bedford County, Buena Vista, Campbell County, Craig County, Floyd County, Lynchburg City, Montgomery County, Pulaski County, Radford City, and Nelson County, schools will be closed Friday, with several divisions assigning employee reporting codes or shifting to remote learning.

Auburn Baptist Christian Academy, Covenant Christian Academy, Hughes Education Center in Christiansburg, Rockbridge Christian Academy, and the National D-Day Memorial will also be closed. Rockbridge County Schools and Giles County Schools announced virtual learning days, while Nelson County additionally noted Remote Learning with Employee Code 1.

A number of school systems are delaying operations by two hours, including Bland County, Carroll County, Franklin County, Grayson County, Lexington City Schools, Shenandoah Preschool, Tazewell County Schools, and multiple Southwest Virginia districts such as Buchanan County (Grundy schools), Dickenson County, Lee County, Norton City Schools, Washington County, and Wise County.

Pulaski Area Transit will open late at 11:30 a.m., while New River Community College plans a two-hour delayed opening at 10 a.m. ROCK Club Childcare in Radford and TAP Waddell Head Start will also operate on a two-hour delay.

Scott County Schools will operate under a Remote Learning Inclement Weather Day, joining other divisions turning to virtual instruction to avoid hazardous travel conditions.

With closures stretching from the New River Valley to Central and Southwest Virginia, officials urged families to monitor local updates as crews work to improve road conditions throughout the day.
