FLORIDA — A Riviera Beach woman has been charged with felony child abuse after police say she choked her 14-year-old child during an argument at their home earlier this week.
According to the Riviera Beach Police Department, officers responded to a 911 call from the teen on Dec. 9. The child reported that their mother, 53-year-old Karen Orthense Brown, grabbed them by the neck during a dispute.
Police said body camera footage captured evidence of the altercation. Officers observed scratches and redness on the child’s neck. Paramedics were called to the scene, but the child declined medical treatment.
Investigators said Brown admitted to grabbing the teen after she was awakened by loud noises and food being taken into a restricted room. The Department of Children and Families was notified, and the children were placed in the care of their grandmother.
Brown was arrested and booked into the Palm Beach County Jail. Police said no weapons were involved in the incident.
