Multiple schools in Virginia announce closures for Wednesday

VIRGINIA — School systems across Virginia will operate on altered schedules Wednesday, December 10, due to lingering winter weather impacts.

Many districts in Central, Southside, and Western Virginia announced either closures or delayed openings, while several private schools and childcare centers also adjusted their schedules.

In Central Virginia, numerous school divisions will be closed. These include Amelia County Schools, Buckingham County Schools, Charlotte County Public Schools, Cumberland County Schools, Dinwiddie County Schools, Goochland County Schools, Petersburg Public Schools, Prince Edward County Schools, and Prince George County Schools

Kenston Forest School and Fuqua School are also closed, with some employees reporting later. Other schools, including Richmond Public Schools, Chesterfield County Public Schools, Colonial Heights Public Schools, Hanover County Schools, Henrico County Schools, and New Kent County Schools, will open two hours late.

Many private and faith-based schools, such as Al Madina School of Richmond, Elijah House Academy, Richmond Christian School, and St. Edward Epiphany Catholic School, will also delay opening by two hours or more.

Western and Southwestern Virginia are seeing similar disruptions. Schools closed for Wednesday include Amherst County Schools, Bedford County Schools, Botetourt County Schools, Carroll County Public Schools, Charlotte County Schools, Craig County Schools, Floyd County Public Schools, Henry County Schools, Lynchburg City Schools, Nelson County Public Schools, and Pittsylvania County Schools

Grayson County Schools will shift to virtual learning, while other divisions such as Bath County, Buena Vista, Franklin County, Galax City, Giles County, Highland County, Martinsville City, Patrick & Henry Community College, Pulaski County, Radford City, Roanoke Valley Christian Schools, Tazewell County, Wythe County, and Waynesboro Public Schools will operate on a two-hour delay.

Several preschools and early-learning centers are also adjusting opening times but will remain open with delayed starts. These delays and closures will allow road crews additional time to improve travel conditions, particularly in rural and elevated areas of the state. Parents and students are encouraged to monitor their school system’s alerts for any further schedule changes.
