INDIANA — A large section of Interstate 65 has been closed after a semi-truck hauling explosives caught fire Tuesday, prompting an emergency response and major traffic disruption.
County officials say both northbound and southbound lanes are shut down between Exit 64 in Bartholomew County and Exit 55 in Jackson County. Authorities confirm the truck was transporting approximately 300 howitzer rounds when it ignited.
A U.S. Army explosive ordnance disposal team is heading to the scene to secure the munitions, while hazmat crews work to stabilize the area. According to officials, the interstate could remain closed for about four hours as teams assess the hazards and ensure the cargo is safe.
Drivers are urged to avoid the area, expect lengthy delays, and use alternate routes until the highway reopens.
