INDIANA — A three-vehicle crash in Montgomery County killed two people and injured eight others Monday afternoon, according to the sheriff’s department. The collision happened around 3:15 p.m. near the intersection of U.S. 231 and County Road 600 South, just south of Crawfordsville.
Investigators believe the crash began when the driver of a pickup truck approached a line of stopped vehicles and attempted to pass them in the westbound lane.
Deputies said the truck entered the travel lanes of U.S. 231, striking a southbound car before colliding with a northbound SUV.
The driver and front-seat passenger in the first car died at the scene. A backseat passenger was extricated from the vehicle and transported to a hospital with serious injuries. Six people inside the SUV were also hospitalized, though their injuries were described as non-life-threatening.
The pickup driver was taken to a hospital and now faces felony charges of operating while intoxicated causing death, as well as criminal recklessness. The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department said the investigation remains ongoing and asked anyone with information to contact Capt. Jake Watson, Detective Jared Kirby, or Deputy Caleb Berry at 765-362-3740.
