ALABAMA — The Madison County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a series of Kia thefts in the Hazelwood subdivision in Hazel Green, which officials believe are linked to a viral social media trend.
Over the past five days, deputies have responded to three reports of stolen vehicles in the neighborhood. In each case, the vehicles were Kia models from 2011 to 2015.
All were taken during the overnight hours, driven a short distance, and later abandoned within two miles of the subdivision. All three vehicles have since been recovered.
Investigators say evidence indicates the thefts are connected to the TikTok trend known as the “Kia Challenge” or “Kia Boyz,” which targets certain Kia models that can be started without a key. According to the sheriff’s office, the vehicles had been locked and the owners still had their keys. The suspects are believed to have broken windows and damaged steering columns and ignition systems to steal the cars.
Deputies are urging residents in the Hazelwood area to stay alert, secure their vehicles, and report any suspicious activity. No suspects have been identified. Anyone with information is asked to call the sheriff’s office at 256-532-4099.
