OHIO — UPDATE: One person has now been confirmed dead.
—
ORIGINAL: Emergency crews responded Friday evening after a trench collapse left three workers trapped on Valley Forge Drive in Miami Township.
According to Fire Chief Dave Jetter, the call came in around 3:49 p.m. Crews arriving on scene found three people trapped inside the trench. Two of the individuals were conscious and talking, while the third was unconscious.
Paramedics worked to provide medical care as the regional Urban Search and Rescue Team began efforts to free the victims. Rescue crews used trench panels to stabilize the site and prevent the side walls from collapsing further during the operation.
Jetter said the three workers had been installing a pipe when the trench gave way. The severity of their injuries was not immediately known, but all three are expected to be transported for treatment once they are freed.
There is currently no timetable for the rescue’s completion. Officials noted that the victims are Spanish-speaking, and a translator is on scene to assist first responders.
