VIRGINIA — A man was hospitalized Thursday morning after his vehicle left the roadway and crashed into Fairfield Middle School’s small gymnasium in Henrico County.

Henrico County police said officers were called to the school along Nine Mile Road at 8:37 a.m. on Dec. 4 for a report of a vehicle that had struck the building.

When officers arrived, they found the driver still inside the vehicle. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment of a possible medical emergency.

According to preliminary findings, the driver ran off the road at Cedar Fork and Nine Mile Road and onto school property, hitting several pieces of school equipment before coming to rest against the gym. No students or staff were injured.

Fairfield Middle School officials notified families shortly after the crash, assuring them that the campus was safe and that classes would continue as scheduled. The message also asked families to keep the driver in their thoughts as he recovers.

Henrico County Building Inspections personnel responded to assess structural damage, and the Henrico Police Crash Team is continuing to investigate the incident.
