Measurable snowfall likely in parts of Michigan Thursday

MICHIGAN — A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for Alger, Luce, and Northern Schoolcraft counties until 7 a.m. Thursday, according to a Wednesday afternoon update from the National Weather Service.

The advisory covers communities including Seney, Grand Marais, Munising, and Newberry.

Forecasters report ongoing lake-effect snow across the region, with an additional 3 to 7 inches expected before the system tapers off early Thursday. Wind gusts may reach up to 35 mph, especially along the Lake Superior shoreline, creating areas of blowing and drifting snow.

These conditions could make travel very difficult, particularly during the Wednesday evening and Thursday morning commutes, as visibility may drop quickly in heavier snow bands.

The weather service noted that snowfall amounts will vary significantly across short distances, which is common during lake-effect events. While much of the advisory area may see several inches of accumulation, the southwest portions of Alger County—such as Chatham and Trenary—are expected to receive 2 inches or less.

Officials urge drivers to slow down, use caution, and be prepared for rapid changes in visibility and road conditions. Travelers are encouraged to monitor local forecasts and stay alert to shifting weather patterns as the advisory continues.
