NORTH CAROLINA — The Granville County Board of Education voted Tuesday night to close Wilton Elementary School and approve new attendance zones for the county’s traditional elementary schools. The board also approved student and staff reassignment plans, all of which will take effect in the 2026–2027 school year.
The decision follows two formal studies and public feedback gathered during a hearing last month. The board had also considered closing C.G. Credle Elementary School, a move that would have saved an estimated $765,637 annually.
However, after reviewing district staff reports in October on the impacts of both options, the board opted to close Wilton Elementary instead.
Closing Wilton Elementary is expected to save the district approximately $598,443 each year. The school has experienced fluctuating enrollment in recent years, dropping from 280 students in 2019 to 227 in 2021, then rising to 322 in 2025.
Wilton Elementary is designated as a Choice School, allowing families to attend even if they live outside its assigned zone. District officials say 93 students currently enroll through school choice.
