SOUTH CAROLINA — A 16-year-old student at Stephens County High School in Georgia was arrested Monday morning after allegedly attempting to bring a loaded firearm onto campus.
According to officials, the student tried to pass through the school’s weapons detection system with a loaded pistol hidden in his backpack. School resource officers immediately took him into custody. The Stephens County Sheriff’s Office later determined the firearm had been reported stolen.
The student was transported to a regional youth detention center and charged with carrying weapons on school property, possession of a handgun by a minor, and theft by receiving stolen property. Deputies said additional charges may be filed.
Superintendent Dr. Connie Franklin said the incident underscores the importance of the district’s safety protocols. “The safety of our students and staff is our highest priority,” she said. “Incidents like this reinforce the importance of our safety measures — especially our weapons detection system — which worked exactly as intended this morning.”
Authorities have not released the student’s identity.
