NORTH CAROLINA — A 25-year-old man was arrested Saturday following a high-speed chase through Alexander and Caldwell counties that ended in a Walgreens parking lot on Highway 321, according to the Alexander County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies said Jose Louis Ramirez-Berreto was speeding through Alexander County when they attempted to pull him over. He fled, leading deputies through rural areas of both Alexander and Caldwell counties.
During the pursuit, deputies reported seeing Ramirez-Berreto throw a “white powdery substance” from his vehicle. Officers deployed stop sticks to puncture the car’s tires, and Ramirez-Berreto ultimately stopped in the Walgreens parking lot.
He was charged with possession of cocaine, fleeing to elude arrest, reckless driving, destroying criminal evidence, failure to stop at a stop sign, and maintaining a vehicle for the use of a controlled substance.
Ramirez-Berreto is being held without bond and is scheduled for his first court hearing on Monday, Nov. 24.
