VIRGINIA — A two-vehicle crash involving a dump truck and a tractor-trailer early Thursday morning left one person injured and caused significant road closures on Interstate 64, according to Virginia State Police.

The crash occurred around 3:40 a.m. on Nov. 20 along I-64 East at the Route 623 exit. Police said a dump truck was stopped or disabled in the right lane when it was struck from behind by a tractor-trailer traveling in the same lane.

“At this time, it has not been confirmed whether the dump truck was moving at the time of impact,” state police said in a news release.

The collision sent the dump truck into the right embankment and the tractor-trailer into the left embankment. Both drivers were trapped in their vehicles, and one passenger was injured. All were taken to the hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening.

State police reported that the tractor-trailer leaked a significant amount of diesel fuel, prompting assistance from the Virginia Department of Transportation’s Traffic Incident Management Program. Cleanup efforts led to extensive road closures in the area.

The crash remains under investigation.
