One person dead following vehicle crash in Indiana

INDIANA — A man was killed and another seriously injured in a crash early Wednesday on Indianapolis’ northeast side, according to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.

IMPD said officers were called just before 5 a.m. to the 2500 block of North Sherman Drive, where they found an SUV that had crashed into a utility pole. Two men were inside the vehicle. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene, while the passenger was taken to a hospital in serious condition. Police later said the passenger was awake and breathing.

Investigators believe the SUV was traveling northbound when the driver lost control, crossed into the southbound lanes, then veered back into the northbound lanes before crashing into the pole.

North Sherman Drive and East 25th Street remained closed Wednesday morning as the investigation continued. The traffic light at the intersection is also out of service, and IMPD said repairs could take some time. AES crews are on scene addressing any related outages.

This marks the second consecutive morning that IMPD has responded to a fatal crash, amid several collisions reported during recent morning and evening commutes.
