MICHIGAN — The National Weather Service in Gaylord has issued multiple Winter Weather Advisories for portions of the eastern Upper Peninsula, warning residents to prepare for lake-effect snow and hazardous travel conditions. The advisories take effect at midnight tonight and remain in place until 7 a.m. Monday.
In Luce County, forecasters expect between 2 and 7 inches of lake-effect snow, with the highest totals likely where persistent snow bands set up. Winds near Lake Superior may gust between 30 and 40 mph, creating blowing snow and sudden drops in visibility.
A separate advisory covers Western Chippewa, Western Mackinac, and Eastern Mackinac counties during the same time frame.
Those areas are forecast to receive 3 to 6 inches of snow, with the potential for locally higher amounts. Wind gusts could reach up to 40 mph, contributing to rapidly changing weather and road conditions.
The National Weather Service cautions that travel may become very difficult at times, especially during the Monday morning commute. Motorists are urged to slow down, allow extra travel time, and be prepared for quick shifts between heavy snow and clearer conditions as lake-effect bands move.
Officials remind drivers that visibility can vary greatly over short distances and conditions may deteriorate without warning.
