OHIO — Police say a suspected shoplifter is in custody after a vehicle crash Tuesday morning on Belmont Avenue caused a widespread power outage in the area.

The incident occurred around 9:30 a.m. at the intersection of Belmont Avenue and Colonial Drive.

According to township police, the driver had fled from an alleged shoplifting incident at a nearby Walmart when officers attempted to stop the vehicle. The car then crashed, bringing down utility poles and power lines.

Colonial Drive was shut down following the crash, and utility crews were called to address the damage. According to FirstEnergy, about 1,125 customers in Liberty and Girard lost power shortly before 10 a.m. The company estimated that service would be restored by around noon.

The suspect was taken into custody at the scene. No additional details were immediately released as the investigation continues.
