NORTH CAROLINA — The North Carolina State Highway Patrol is searching for the driver of a stolen vehicle who fled after leading troopers on a high-speed chase that ended in a crash early Wednesday.

Troopers said the chase began around 1 a.m. on I-440 near Poole Road, where the vehicle was traveling more than 110 mph in a 60 mph zone and did not have its headlights on. When the driver refused to stop, troopers pursued the car for less than 10 miles.

The driver exited onto Lake Wheeler Road, hit a median, and went over a guard rail, crashing into a wooded area near the intersection of Lake Wheeler Road and Interstate 40. The man then ran from the vehicle and disappeared into the woods, according to troopers.

The vehicle had been reported stolen.

State Highway Patrol and Wake County Sheriff’s Office deputies surrounded the area near Lake Wheeler Road and Centennial Parkway. Officers were also positioned near N.C. State’s Centennial Campus and the State Farmers Market as part of the search.
