INDIANA — A pilot was killed Tuesday afternoon when a single-engine plane crashed just north of Anderson, according to the Madison County Sheriff’s Department.

Deputies responded to the scene around 12:30 p.m. at 4261 N. County Road 100W, where they found the wreckage on fire. Officials said the plane had struck a tree after apparently touching down several times in a nearby field.

Preliminary information indicates the aircraft was traveling from Rensselaer to Anderson. The Anderson Airport Tower had been in contact with the pilot shortly before the crash, and there were no signs of distress during communication, authorities said.

The identity of the pilot has not yet been released. The investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing.
