MICHIGAN — A wrong-way crash on US-131 in Allegan County early Sunday resulted in three deaths and left three others with life-threatening injuries, authorities said.
According to the Allegan County Sheriff’s Office, deputies and Gun Lake Tribal Police officers were dispatched after reports of a vehicle traveling southbound in the northbound lanes near 129th Avenue in Wayland Township.
A Gun Lake Tribal Police officer spotted the wrong-way vehicle near mile marker 59 and attempted to intercept it, but the vehicle collided head-on with a northbound car near mile marker 57 in Martin Township.
The female driver of the wrong-way vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. The male driver and a male front-seat passenger in the other car also died. Three additional passengers in that vehicle were critically injured and transported to area hospitals.
Authorities have not released the names of those involved pending family notification. The Allegan County Sheriff’s Office Accident Reconstruction Team is leading the investigation, and it is currently unknown whether alcohol was a factor.
US-131 was closed for several hours following the crash but has since reopened. Multiple agencies responded to the scene, including the Michigan State Police, Plainwell Department of Public Safety, Wayland City Police, local EMS units, area fire departments, the Allegan County Medical Examiner’s Office, and the Michigan Department of Transportation.
The investigation remains ongoing.
