MICHIGAN — A 15-year-old boy from Carleton died early Saturday after being struck by a vehicle on North Telegraph Road, according to Monroe County Sheriff Troy Goodnough.
The crash occurred around 1:30 a.m. on northbound N. Telegraph Road, just south of Paree Street. Investigators said the teen was walking south along the northbound shoulder near the white fog line with a 14-year-old friend from Newport when he was hit by a 31-year-old Newport woman driving northbound.
Sheriff Goodnough said the driver initially believed she had struck an object and stopped at a nearby gas station. After noticing significant damage to her vehicle, she went to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office to report the incident.
The sheriff’s office said the driver was wearing a seatbelt and was not injured. Driver inattention appears to be a factor in the crash.
The victim, who was wearing dark-colored clothing, was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. His name has not been released.
Community Ambulance and the Sheriff’s Office Chaplain Program assisted at the scene. The crash remains under investigation by Lieutenant Brian Quinn and Deputies Cody Carena and Hunter Chirillo of the Traffic Services Division.
