PENNSYLVANIA — An inmate is facing homicide charges after fatally beating his cellmate at Cumberland County Prison, according to the district attorney’s office.
Dangelo Nowlin, 33, was arrested early on Oct. 22 for an unrelated defiant trespassing incident before being taken to the prison.
Around 11:52 a.m., after being assigned a cell, Nowlin reportedly began physically assaulting his cellmate, 41-year-old Erick Gainer, who was sleeping in the top bunk at the time.
Gainer was transported to Penn State Health Holy Spirit Medical Center for emergency surgery to treat severe brain swelling. He died from his injuries the following day, Oct. 23, after doctors were unable to control the swelling.
Nowlin faces homicide charges and is ineligible for bail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Nov. 5.
