One person dead after police chase ends in crash in Indiana

INDIANA — A woman is dead and a man is critically injured after a police chase ended in a crash early Friday morning, according to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD).

IMPD said the chase began around 3:30 a.m. when Southwest District officers ran the license plate of a vehicle near West Troy Avenue and Westbrook Avenue and discovered the registered owner had two active warrants for theft and possession of a controlled substance.

When officers attempted a traffic stop, the driver refused to pull over, leading police on a pursuit that ended when the suspect vehicle collided with a tractor-trailer at West Raymond Street and South Harding Street.

The crash killed a female passenger, who was pronounced dead at the scene by Indianapolis Emergency Medical Services. The male driver was taken to a local hospital in critical condition.

The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured, and no officers were hurt, IMPD said.

West Raymond Street and South Harding Street remained closed for several hours Friday morning as IMPD accident investigators processed the scene. The investigation is ongoing.
