NORTH CAROLINA — A passenger was killed early Sunday morning in a single-vehicle crash on Weaver Road near Kenly, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
Troopers said the crash occurred just after midnight when the vehicle left the roadway and struck a large oak tree, trapping the passenger inside. The passenger was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver fled on foot following the crash but was located by a trooper about a mile away, authorities said. He was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
The State Highway Patrol continues to investigate the cause of the crash.
