TENNESSEE — Detectives are investigating a deadly shooting that occurred during an argument over a pedicab ride in downtown Nashville early Saturday morning.

Officers responded shortly before 2:30 a.m. to Rep. John Lewis Way, between Broadway and Demonbreun Street.

According to the Metro Nashville Police Department, two pedicabs were transporting a group of visitors from Memphis back to their hotel when an argument broke out between one driver and a passenger.

Both pedicabs stopped outside Bridgestone Arena, and the 21-year-old driver asked all passengers to exit. A physical altercation followed, during which the driver said he was punched in the back of the head by a passenger. He then claimed that 23-year-old Adrian Rivas-Romo approached him quickly, prompting him to fire a gun.

Rivas-Romo was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center with a gunshot wound to the head and later died from his injuries.

The 21-year-old driver called 911 and identified himself as the shooter; he was arrested at the scene. The firearm used was recovered by investigators.

Police said the claim of self-defense is under review, and detectives are coordinating with the District Attorney’s Office to determine whether charges will be filed.
