OHIO — A shopping plaza on Center Road was evacuated Tuesday morning as a precaution following a chemical incident at a nearby waste management facility.
Avon police said the evacuation affected Avon Crossing, located in the 1400 block of Center Road, which includes businesses such as Lowe’s, JC Penney, Petco, and Arby’s.
The incident occurred around 9 a.m. at Reworld Waste, located at 35850 Schneider Court, where a small chemical reaction caused a limited release affecting only the immediate area. Reworld Waste provides waste transportation, disposal, and hazardous waste treatment services.
Avon Fire Chief David Swope said there were no injuries and no chemicals have been detected in the air. Fire officials are continuing to monitor the situation and are working with the Lorain Haz Mat team to identify the chemical involved.
