FLORIDA — The FBI is investigating a series of emailed bomb threats sent to school districts in Brevard and Sumter counties, which officials believe are part of a statewide hoax intended to scam schools.
“These threats are not considered credible and appear to be part of a hoax intended to solicit money,” Brevard County officials said in a statement.
The district said there would be no changes to school operations and assured families that “there is no indication of any danger to our campuses, and students are safe to attend school tomorrow as scheduled.”
Sumter County School District also received the threatening email, which officials said appeared to be part of a “swatting” thread circulating statewide. While the district does not believe the threat is credible, officials said there will be an increased law enforcement presence on campuses “out of an abundance of caution.”
Brevard County Public Schools confirmed that both the sheriff’s office and the FBI are working to trace the source of the hoax emails.
