INDIANA — A police chase through downtown Fort Wayne ended in a standoff Monday morning, just blocks from the Allen County Jail.

According to a spokesperson for the Fort Wayne Police Department (FWPD), the incident began around 8:45 a.m. after witnesses reported a man passed out in a pickup truck on business property near State Boulevard and Clinton Street.

When officers arrived and the man woke up, he sped away, leading police on a pursuit through downtown streets.

The chase ended near the intersection of Clinton and Superior streets after officers deployed stop sticks. Police said the man then refused to exit his vehicle and began threatening to shoot himself and officers.

Unmarked police vehicles and members of the FWPD Special Operations unit were seen positioned near Freimann Square, with roads in the area blocked off.

Authorities are urging people to stay away from the area and avoid the nearby train tracks. Negotiations with the man remain ongoing as the standoff continues.
