FLORIDA — One juvenile is dead and another is in custody following a shooting Thursday afternoon at Vogt-Meloon Park near the South Orlando YMCA and Oak Ridge High School, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies said the incident began on a basketball court at Vogt-Meloon Park, where one juvenile shot another before fleeing on foot toward Oak Ridge High School. The suspect was detained on campus by a school resource deputy and is now in custody, authorities said.
The victim was transported to a hospital, where they were pronounced dead.
Orange County Public Schools confirmed that Oak Ridge High School was briefly placed on lockdown during the police investigation. The district said the lockdown occurred after dismissal and that students and staff who remained on campus were safe.
The lockdown has since been lifted, officials said. The investigation remains ongoing.
