SOUTH CAROLINA — A 12-year-old was taken into custody by Jasper County Sheriff’s Office deputies after allegedly trying to pull a gun on them during a traffic stop Wednesday morning.
According to the sheriff’s office, deputies were conducting a traffic stop at the BP Station at Point South on Oct. 8 when they discovered a 12-year-old attempting to discard marijuana.
As deputies moved in to detain the juvenile, he reportedly tried to pull a firearm from his waistband.
Deputies quickly detained the youth and confiscated the gun without any injuries, officials said.
In a statement, the sheriff’s office called the incident “deeply concerning,” pointing to the growing issue of young people becoming involved in criminal activity.
“The Jasper County Sheriff’s Office remains committed to working with families, schools, and community partners to help guide our youth toward safer, more positive paths,” the agency said.
The investigation remains ongoing.
