One person dead following vehicle crash in Illinois

ILLINOIS — A Carbondale man is dead following a single-vehicle crash early Thursday morning, according to the Carbondale Police Department.

The crash occurred around 1:56 a.m. at the intersection of East Pleasant Hill Road and South Wall Street. Investigators said the vehicle failed to stop at the intersection, left the roadway, struck a tree, and then caught fire.

The driver, identified as 38-year-old Daryl Norwood of Carbondale, was pronounced dead at the scene from injuries sustained in the crash. No passengers were in the vehicle at the time.

The Carbondale Police Department is investigating with assistance from the Carbondale Fire Department, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department, the Jackson County Coroner’s Office, the Southern Illinois University Department of Public Safety, and the Illinois State Police.

Authorities are asking anyone with information about the crash to contact the Carbondale Police Department.
