NORTH CAROLINA — A Wake County woman has been arrested in connection with the fatal overdose of a man earlier this year, according to the Wake County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies responded to a home off Panther Lake Road on March 29, where they found 39-year-old Matthew Godbold unresponsive. Investigators suspected an overdose and sent evidence from the scene to the Wake County Bureau of Forensic Services. Testing confirmed the presence of fentanyl.
Detectives later determined that 37-year-old Lauren Olsen had sold drugs to Godbold that led to his death. The sheriff’s office has not disclosed how investigators linked Olsen to the case.
On Monday evening, deputies arrested Olsen and charged her with aggravated death by distribution and felony sell/deliver of a Schedule II controlled substance. She is scheduled for her first court appearance Tuesday afternoon.
Court records show Olsen has prior arrests for drug possession and related offenses in other counties.
Fentanyl, a synthetic opioid, is legally prescribed for severe pain when manufactured by pharmaceutical companies. However, illicit fentanyl produced in unregulated labs has fueled a surge in overdose deaths nationwide.
