One person dead following drowning incident in Florida

FLORIDA — A 51-year-old man from out of state drowned offshore in Volusia County on Saturday, according to Sheriff Mike Chitwood.

Chitwood said in a social media post that the man was pulled out into the ocean by strong currents and was unable to make it back to shore.

Volusia County Beach Safety has issued warnings about dangerous rip currents affecting the area’s beaches. The currents are being fueled by Tropical Depression 9 and Hurricane Humberto, which remain further out to sea.

Red flags are flying along the beaches, signaling hazardous conditions. Officials strongly advise against swimming in the ocean at this time.

Rip currents and rough surf are expected to continue throughout the week, authorities said.
