PENNSYLVANIA — A 74-year-old Archbald woman faces charges following a hit-and-run crash that killed a 79-year-old bicyclist in Lackawanna County over the weekend, authorities said.
Police said Diane Fontana struck Raymond G. Bacchiocchi with her Cadillac SUV Saturday morning at the intersection of Main and Bridge Streets in Blakely. Bacchiocchi was hospitalized in critical condition and died later that evening.
Fontana, who fled the scene, was identified after witnesses provided the SUV’s license plate and a description of the driver. She later went to the police station voluntarily, acknowledging that she hit Bacchiocchi and briefly returned to the scene but did not get out. According to a police affidavit, Fontana told officers she was running late for her uncle’s funeral.
Six witnesses reported seeing the crash: the SUV turned left from Main Street, striking Bacchiocchi, who fell and was unresponsive. The SUV briefly returned but left again without the driver exiting the vehicle.
Fontana has been charged in connection with the hit-and-run. District Attorney Brian Gallagher said additional charges may be filed after the autopsy and crash reconstruction are complete. Police said she showed “no remorse” during questioning.
Bail and preliminary hearing details were not immediately available Monday.
