Ohio resident arrested in connection to 35 drug overdoses in West Virginia

OHIO — Charleston, WV Police say an Ohio man has been arrested in connection with a surge of drug overdoses that struck the city earlier this week.

Police and Mayor Amy Goodwin announced Friday that between Wednesday and Thursday nights, 35 overdoses were reported across Charleston.

Authorities believe the incidents were linked to particularly potent drugs circulating in the area.

According to Deputy Chief of Police Scott Webb, many of the patients did not respond quickly after receiving naloxone, prompting a joint investigation with the Metro Drug Enforcement Network Team (MDENT).

That effort led to the arrest of Anton Jeffries, 31, of Ohio, who has been charged with possession with intent to deliver fentanyl.

Jeffries is being held at the South Central Regional Jail. Webb said the department will continue its investigation to ensure the supply of the dangerous drugs is removed from Charleston streets and to identify any other individuals involved in distribution.

Officials said no fatalities have been linked to the overdoses. Mayor Goodwin praised the city’s first responders for their quick actions and coordination, crediting their work with saving lives during the crisis.
