ILLINOIS — A 17-year-old Urbana High School student was arrested Wednesday after allegedly threatening to “shoot up the school,” authorities said.
According to the Urbana Police Department, the threat was reportedly made following a confrontation with other students and was overheard by school personnel, who immediately notified police. The incident occurred near Vine and Oregon Streets around 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 17.
Officers responded to the school, began an investigation, and quickly located the student. A search of the student’s home found no weapons.
Police confirmed that the threat was made off school grounds and that there was no evidence of firearms at Urbana High School. “Throughout the investigation, Urbana Police worked closely with Urbana School District officials to ensure the safety of students and staff,” the department said.
No further identifying information has been released due to the student’s age. Authorities emphasized that all individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
