OHIO — A customer at the Wal-Mart Super Center #3293 in Chardon won a $50,000 prize playing the Ohio Lottery’s Billion scratch-off game.

The winner, who asked not to be named, claimed one of the game’s third-tier prizes. After federal and state tax withholdings, the payout will be about $36,000.

The winner said he was “extra surprised” by the windfall and plans to use the money to pay bills. He noted he has previously won smaller prizes playing the same game.

The odds of winning the $50,000 prize are 1 in 99,692. As of September 17, the Ohio Lottery reports 115 prizes of that amount still remain, along with other prizes including a top award of $1 million a year for life.

Since its creation in 1974, the Ohio Lottery has contributed more than $33 billion to education across the state. More information on scratch-off games and the lottery’s contributions to schools is available at www.ohiolottery.com/supportingeducation.
